Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
